Location

The Torhaus (German for "Gatehouse") is situated on the east wing of the Tempelhof Airport building, directly at Columbiadamm 10. It is a small building that accounts for only a tiny fraction of the former airport’s total area. Nevertheless, the Torhaus offers insight into numerous issues that are also relevant to the airport building. Issues of heritage conservation, public participation and sustainable development are concentrated here as if under a magnifying glass.
Through the collaborative process of recent years, the Torhaus has demonstrated how successful small-scale development can be achieved in a pioneering manner.
The result is a vibrant and diverse space that contributes to the revitalisation of the entire site.
Renovation
In 2023, the building underwent energy-efficiency refurbishment as part of a collaboration between Torhaus Berlin e. V. and Tempelhof Projekt GmbH.
Thanks to the refurbishment – carried out in accordance with the principles of circular and integrated planning and construction – the Torhaus now saves 24 tonnes of CO₂ annually. This represents more than 80% of its previous energy consumption.
The ‘Torhaus Energy Renovation’ project was funded under the Berlin Programme for Sustainable Development (BENE) with funds from the European Regional Development Fund and the State of Berlin.
